Soil Beds
The Soil-Bed references a style of native soil garden bed unique to Mittleider Gardens. Soil Beds are identified by ridges on the sides with a 12-inch wide planting area. The careful forming of soil beds raises the growing area two inches higher than the level of the adjacent aisles, protecting plant roots from suffocating in the event of excessive rain or flooding. Soil Beds are also meticulously leveled when they are first created, (and re-formed and checked to be level each year thereafter), to ensure that water and essential nutrients reach all plants grown within them in equal measure.
Grow-Boxes
The Grow-Box, a phrase coined by Dr. Jacob Mittleider, refers to an above-ground garden container usually made from lumber in an open-bottom style that rests on level ground. Most commonly, grow-boxes are placed on native soil, although they may be placed on other non-soil surfaces if necessary, where such surfaces still allow for water to drain from the bottom of the box. Grow-boxes are filled with “Custom Soil” and not native soil.
Greenhouses
In principle, a greenhouse is merely a structure that allows the gardener to harness more fully the power of the 2nd Law of Plant Growth: Temperature. They can be small or large, suited to the needs of the grower. From mini-greenhouses created with simple, sturdy, yet inexpensive A-frames that cover individual soil beds or grow-boxes, to larger In-the-Garden Greenhouses, to full-size greenhouses utilizing natural Ridge-Vent ventilation and even Geo-Thermal/Air warming, we’ve “got you covered!” Check back frequently for access to new content in development all about greenhouses and their use in your garden!

“Generally speaking, people like to grow something in the soil, but too often the results are disappointing. It often happens that the fault is not in the “dirt.” Thoughtful, daily attention will yield rich returns.”
JACOB R. MITTLEIDER
“The Mittleider Method takes work, but it will give you fantastic yields if you’ll be consistent and follow the recipe.”
JIM KENNARD
“What is the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable?”
